TrailSeekers

A 2.5 Day Programme designed to upskill students and cooperating teachers in the areas of hill-skills and adventure planning.

This programme supports the learning outcomes of curricular areas such as ‘Wellbeing’, PE, SPHE and co-curricular initiatives such as Gaisce Adventure Journey.

Click here for a full programme description.

Training ratios for participating schools are 1:8. The 8 selected TrailSeekers will receive practical and theoretical training aligned with Mountaineering Ireland’s Happy Hiking, Hill Skills Series.

These students will be encouraged to take on greater leadership roles in the planning of any related activity within the broader school community and to operate in a manner that is safe, responsible and respectful of our outdoor, upland environment.

As Mountaineering Ireland members, participating students will have the opportunity to pursue more formal training pathways; support will also be provided for establishing a club where there is an interest.

Mountaineering Ireland for Teachers

Upskilling opportunities for those interested in teaching beyond the classroom

Mountaineering Ireland recognises the unique role that teachers play in creating opportunities for our young people to engage in recreational activities. These can be some of the most valuable and transformative learning experiences that students will encounter in their school lives.

We recognise also that teachers occasionally feel ill-equipped to facilitate learning or recreation in hill or mountain environments.

Mountaineering Ireland is actively looking to support interested teachers with both informal and formal training opportunities. Irrespective of whether you teach primary or secondary school, we would like to hear from you!

Courses

Mountaineering Ireland's One-Day Skills Courses include the Happy Hiking Series: Hill Skills & Hiking with your Phone.

Formal training pathways include Mountain Skills and Lowland Leader. Details of these training options and the costs involved can be found here

All forms of training have relevance for teachers involved in school hiking clubs, Gaisce Adventure Journeys, PE walking programmes, Wellbeing initiatives, charity challenges or Camino training in schools.
