Most walking and climbing activities in Ireland take place in the natural environment, therefore access to the outdoors is absolutely fundamental to our sports. Environment

The landscapes that we journey, and their wildlife, all add to the enjoyment we get from our time hillwalking, climbing, and mountaineering. The environments we visit are home to some special species, many of which have adapted in harsh weather and poor soils. 

The impact of climate change, biodiversity loss, and growth in the popularity of outdoor recreation activities is having an impact on Ireland's environment. Mountaineering Ireland aims to "support our members in responding to the climate crisis through increasing understanding, personal action, advocacy and partnership", and has launched such initiatives as the 'Helping the Hills' initiative to meet these goals. Learn More
