Team Ireland National Climbing Team 2027

Mountaineering Ireland are excited to announce the launch of Team Ireland National Climbing Team Programme 2027 for Boulder and Lead disciplines. (The speed Climbing Programme will be communicated at a later date). This Programme encompasses the upper three tiers of the Performance Pathway, with focus on our elite level athletes in training, preparation and support to achieve success at European and International Level.

Entry to this programme is through TIER 3 Team Ireland Training Squad from which athletes can then be selected (based on performance standards) to join the Team Ireland Competition Squad and / or Team Ireland Podium Squad to represent Ireland at International Competitions. 



 TIER 3 : TEAM IRELAND TRAINING SQUAD        


Age Category : U17 | U19 | Senior


This is the base Team Ireland National Training Squad from which members will be selected onto the Team Ireland Competition Squad and Podium Squad to represent Ireland Internationally at European and World Level competitions.

The top three performing Irish athletes in the respective age categories and disciplines in the 2027 Irish Championships (Irish Bouldering Championships January 2027, Irish Lead Climbing Championships February 2027) will be invited onto the Team Ireland Training Squad which will provide International Camp training opportunities with International Level coaching.

The focus of this Squad will be mastering training, refining competition literacy, pressure, resilience and consistency, and fine tuning athletes performances to be ready to compete successfully at the International Level. 

The first of these Training Camps in each discipline will be Selection Events for entry onto the National Team Competition Squad and Podium Squads based on Performance Standards set by the Selection Team.

  TEAM IRELAND TIER 2   Competition Squad    


Age Category : U17 | U19 | Senior

This is the Team Ireland Competition Squad of athletes selected from the Team Ireland Training Squad to represent Ireland Internationally at European and World Level competitions.

Athletes selected for this Squad will also remain as part of the Team Ireland Training Squad and take part in the International camps as part of this Training Squad. 

Athletes at this tier should have the ability to perform successfully at European Cup Level, with high level tactical, physical and psychological skills. 

Athletes will be selected onto this Team from the Team Ireland Training Squad. Selection will take place during the first International Training Squad Camps in 2027 ( February : Boulder ) ( March : Lead )

Boulder : Selections will take place in a comp. simulation boulder setting of European Cup standard in a International Level hosting venue. Athletes will be selected on their performance and ability to perform at European Cup Standard. Routes will be set by a World Climbing certified European Cup Route-setter.

Lead : Selections will take place in an International Level Climbing Wall,  comp. simulation boulder setting of European Cup standard in a International hosting venue. Athletes will be selected on their performance and ability to perform on-sight and red point of grades equivalent to Performance Standards of European Cup Level. Location and exact format of Selection Camp will be communicated at a later date.

  TEAM IRELAND TIER 1   Podium Squad 


Age Category : 17+


This is the highest Level of the Performance Pathway for Elite Level athletes who are performing with podium & finals success at the Olympic, World / European Levels. Athletes in this tier will have a track record of International Competition Success and have mastered the skills required to compete at this level.

Athletes of this Level will be eligible to apply for financial support through Sport Ireland's Carded Scheme.
