Environmental Defence Fund

Mountaineering Ireland established its Environmental Defence Fund in the 1980s to fund major environmental campaigns such as opposing mining on Mweelrea and the erection of interpretive centres in Wicklow and the Burren. Mountaineering Ireland clubs and individual members are encouraged to make a contribution to the Environmental Defence Fund. This fund is ring-fenced for access and conservation purposes.

Money raised is used for the protection of access and the upland environment, practical conservation work, and to refund Mountaineering Ireland clubs who have an outlay on planning appeals etc.

Recent Environmental Defence Fund expenditure has included the Helping the Hills initiative and opposition to a windfarm proposed for the western Mournes.
