Mountain Log

Guidelines for contributors

  • We welcome well-illustrated articles about hillwalking and climbing in Ireland and abroad; about new or first Irish ascents of peaks or climbs at home or abroad; or about significant Irish achievements while trekking and climbing in the Alps and the Greater Ranges of the world.

  • In keeping with Mountaineering Ireland's ethos of personal responsibility, we value articles about club-organised or self-directed experiences over articles about a guided trip on a well-known route.

  • As we try to vary the content in the Mountain Log, articles about places that have not recently featured in the magazine are more likely to be published.

  • Articles about hillwalking or climbing in Ireland are particularly welcome.

  • We also welcome articles on hill and mountain-related issues, such as the environment and access; ‘how to do it’ articles on mountain photography, climbing techniques and tips, and getting ready for expeditions; flora and fauna; health and safety; history and geography; archaeology and geology, etc.

  • We cover all types of climbing, from traditional rock-climbing routes, sport climbing and bouldering to indoor climbing.

  • The list is almost endless, so long as the topic is related to some aspect of our sport.

  • We would encourage clubs to submit profiles of their clubs, especially when they are celebrating an anniversary year, whether 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 years.

  • Club profiles and reports of club trips can be up to 900 words in length and should be accompanied by 6-8 high-resolution photographs, accompanied by captions and credits.

  • In general, we are looking for good photos of the peaks or routes referred to in an article. We would also include photos of the main participants in a climb, or group photos to accompany club profiles or trips.

  • Always provide the photographer’s name and a caption, please, so we know where the photo was taken, when (if known) and by whom.

  • To print photos, we need them as medium- or high-resolution files of at least 1 Mb in size, or from 3 to 5 Mb for use as full-page photos.

  • While club profiles should not exceed 900 words, feature articles can extend to 1,500 words. Brief additional information, such as about location, transport, logistics, costs, travel or trekking companies or guided-tour operators used, and a clear map, are all helpful also.

  • Please include a brief biography (approximately 50 words) stating if you are a Mountaineering Ireland member, in a club, what type of mountaineering activities you do, etc.

  • A portrait photo of the author is also required for use along with the biographical note; please send one or two, but please do not send photos of yourself in sunglasses.

  • We also welcome relevant news items (max 300 words), snippets of news (max 100 words) or other useful and relevant information, all with suitable photos, if possible. News items accompanied by a relevant high-resolution photo are more likely to be published.

  • Please submit all contributions in Word and by email. Alternatively, send your articles in PDF format.

  • Material and photographs in an electronic format should be sent by email to: [email protected]

  • We do not pay for contributions to the magazine. As we strive to maintain a balance of content relevant to our readership, we cannot publish all articles received.

  • For information on advertising in the Mountain Log, please contact Liam Feeley in the Mountaineering Ireland office at [email protected] or on +353 (0)1 625 1115.
