Digital Log(DLOG)

Welcome to the Mountaineering Ireland Digital Log or DLOG. The DLOG is a facility to record a wide range of mountaineering activities in one place. Whether you are walking in the lowlands in Ireland, mountaineering in the Alps or climbing on indoor walls, you can easily log your activity for future reference and indeed to share (with you permission) with other members.

The DLOG is a new benefit for all members of Mountaineering Ireland and can be used in a variety of ways from logging walks within your club to recording routes for any of our awards to simply keeping details of all your activities in one place for your own reference.

The DLOG has been designed to be as user-friendly as possible but please take a look through these guidance notes before you start using the new system or refer to them if you come across something unclear.

You will have seen a new button under ‘My Details’ when you open your personal profile page. This button, ‘My Digital Log’ opens out to a number of other associated pages. The DLOG home page provides an overview of your logged activities . You can also select a particular activity and click on ‘View Activity Stats’ to bring up all your logs related to that activity. The Award Syllabus button on his home page will open a page showing the syllabi for any awards you have registered for.

Add Log Entry
Start by selecting an activity from the drop down box. A form relating to that activity will open which can be completed by selecting the relevant options from the various drop down boxes. Some of the options under ‘Type’ will be especially for our Award candidates. All the data relating to location currently on the database is in Ireland, however, we will shortly be adding UK data as well. In the meantime, if you can’t find the location you are looking for, simply use the ‘Custom Location’ function. Provide the detail of the summit within the mountain range, a new crag or a new route within an existing crag here and we will validate and approve it behind the scenes. If we’re not completely sure of your location, we’ll send you an email. If you are logging walks or climbs for one of our awards, you will need to complete all fields on the log page. If you’re not, it’s completely up to you how much or little information you fill in. However, remember that the more information you include, the easier it will be to find and refer back to this activity at a later date Don’t forget to save your log once you have completed the necessary fields.

View Log Entries
This function is used for viewing and sorting existing log entries. All activities which have data logged against them will appear in the drop down box at the top .Once you have selected the activity, press ‘view log entries’. You can further filter by region, type, style, duration and distance. The aim is that using this filtering system, you should be able to single out any specific areas you want to look at e.g. Quality Mountain Days from lowland walks and multi-pitch climbs at Fair Head from E3 climbs at Glendalough.

Manage Permissions
You can give permission to another Mountaineering Ireland member to view your DLOG from this section. This is particularly for our Award candidates who may wish to share their DLOG with an instructor, referee or assessor. You will need to know the email address and Mountaineering Ireland membership number of the person with whom you would like to share your DLOG. Once you have completed these details, press ‘Add’. This person will be able to view your DLOG (see Log Logup below) up to 30 days after permission is given. You can reduce this maximum period by changing the ‘Expiry Date’

Log Lookup
As long as you have already been granted permission by the other member, you can view their DLOG by putting in their MI number. Access to that person’s DLOG is for up to 30 days after permission is given.

Award References
In the case of those working through awards, this section can be used to request a reference for a specific award. N.B the referee does not need to be an MI member – only their name and email address is required.

The DLOG is very much a work in progress and we welcome your feedback and suggestions. Equally, if you are experiencing any difficulties, please contact Rozanne Bell. ([email protected] or on 01 6251112)

Specific notes for Award Candidates:
Please note that you will not find reference to specific Awards within the DLOG but rather to activities. For example, if you are logging routes for your Mountain Leader Award, choose ‘Walking’ as the ‘Activity’ and qualify that further by selecting the most relevant option under ‘Type’. Likewise, if you are logging Mountain Skills walks (and not using our paper log book), Lowland Leader Award walks or Hill and Moorland Leader Award walks you will also choose ‘Walking’ as your overall activity. Climbing is split into ‘Trad Climbing’ (covering the Single Pitch and Multi-Pitch Awards) and ‘Indoor Climbing’ (covering the Climbing Wall Award and Climbing Wall Leading Award).

Mountain Leader Award Candidates:
You will notice that options for ‘Expedition Plan’, ‘Expedition Report’ and ‘Observation’ appear under ‘Type’

Expedition Plan – once you select this option, you can complete the form that opens. The form will ask for your camp details. Once you have completed this section, click on ‘Submit’.

There is a section at the bottom of the page where you can input the details of your referee. Once you hit ‘save’ an email will be sent to your referee and giving the a link to a reference form to complete. You will get a confirmation message that the request has been sent. If you do not see this message, scroll up the page to ensure there is no missing information highlighted in red.

The Expedition Report and Observation request follow the same format as above.
