Celebrate Hiking on National Walking Day

27 September 2026

Taking place during European Week of Sport, the campaign celebrates walking in all its forms and encourages people of all ages and abilities to get outdoors and active.

We are encouraging all Mountaineering Ireland clubs to get involved in National Walking Week & National Walking Day 2026.

For hillwalking clubs, two themes are particularly relevant:

Happy Hiking Day – a great opportunity to showcase your club and encourage people to discover the enjoyment of hiking. Why not organise an introductory or social hike, invite new people to join you, or simply dedicate one of your regular club walks to Happy Hiking Day?

National Walking Day: Teen Step Out Day – clubs with youth members, family groups or links with schools and youth organisations could use this as an opportunity to encourage younger people to get outdoors and experience hillwalking in a safe, welcoming and non-competitive environment.

The suggested themes and dates are a guide only, so choose the day or theme that works best for your club. Whether you organise a specific event or simply use your regular club walk to support the campaign, every walk helps promote participation.

How your club can get involved

1. Register your walk
If your club is organising a walk during National Walking Week, please register it on the Get Ireland Walking website. Registered walks become part of the national campaign and will help showcase the fantastic walking activity taking place across Ireland.

2. Promote your participation
Use your club's social media channels to promote your walk and encourage members, families and new participants to get involved.

There’s also an added incentive – all registered walks and groups will automatically be entered into the National Walking Week photo competition, with prizes up for grabs.

Register your walk and find out more about National Walking Week 2026

We would love to see Mountaineering Ireland clubs getting behind Happy Hiking Day and National Walking Day and showing how social and enjoyable hillwalking can be.

Thank you for your continued support and for helping us encourage more people to get outdoors and enjoy the hills.
