It is estimated that the work will equate to no more than 36 days per year.
This will be a key role in delivering a Talent and Performance strategy, in particular contributing to the programme by focussing on the preparation of Team climbers to deliver performances at Irish, British and European Cups and Championships.
Travel throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe to attend appropriate competitions and coaching camps will be expected.
Main Purpose
To contribute to the development of Mountaineering Ireland’s Talent and Performance Coaching Programme by providing technical coaching services to nationally identified climbers, with the aim of meeting Mountaineering Ireland’s performance targets at international benchmark events, including European Championships and towards Olympic Games.
The appointed consultant will:
- Liaise with the high-performance coordinator, climbers, parents and sport science consultants to ensure appropriate and aligned training programmes are in place for all members of the Teams
- Work with climbers on the Teams to develop and implement their technical development plans
- Coach and support climbers at national and international training and competition
- Develop appropriate and effective interpersonal relationships with Team climbers and staff
- Maintain and develop a network of contacts and relationships that facilitate these tasks

Task Summary
|
Coordinating and developing the technical aspects of Mountaineering Ireland’s Talent and Performance Programme by:
- Liaising with the high-performance coordinator, climbers, parents and sport science consultants to ensure appropriate and aligned training programmes are in place for all members of the Teams
- Working with climbers on the Teams to develop and implement their technical development plans
- Monitoring and evaluating the performances of climbers on the Teams
- Providing regular (six weekly) reports and analyses on the progress of Youth and Senior Team athletes, and improvement of the programme, directly to the High-Performance coordinator.

Key responsibilities and main tasks and activities
|
Specifically, the consultancy will:
- Liaise with the high-performance coordinator, climbers, parents and sport science consultants to ensure appropriate and aligned training programmes are in place for all members of the Teams.
Ensure regular written and verbal communication is maintained with all Team climbers.
Set a strong and distinctive ‘performance culture’.
Ensure that information about the coaching and competition programme is provided to staff, climbers and key stakeholders (either written or verbal) on a regular basis.
Ensure that all established policies and procedures are adhered to by all members of the programme.
- Work with Youth and Senior Team climbers to develop and implement their technical development plans.
In conjunction with the high-performance coordinator, design and deliver communication mechanisms to provide feedback to all climbers and staff associated with the teams.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of the Youth and Senior Team climbers.
Prepare climber analysis reports, ensuring all reports support the ongoing development of programme climbers
- Provide regular report and analyses on the development of Youth and Senior Team climbers, and improvement to the programme, directly to the high-performance coordinator.
Actively engage with, and seek the views on six weekly basis, of all those who are involved in the coaching and development of programme climbers to gather climber information. Attend six weekly team review meetings to feedback on athlete development.

Qualifications required
- Coaching qualifications or demonstrated coaching experience
- Anti-doping training completed
- Safeguarding training completed
Experience and knowledge
- Working within a Talent and Performance environment, developing emerging climbers into elite performers
- Devising and executing long term training plans to guide development of climbers for peak performance at benchmark events
- Working within a Talent and Performance team to actively contribute to performance improvements with climbers
- Demonstrated ability to identify and integrate key support SSSM services to assist athlete development and performance
- Knowledge of contemporary coaching techniques and practices
- Knowledge of the latest coaching methods and standards applied in leading climbing nations
- Knowledge and expertise in technical training in Olympic disciplines
Skills and abilities
