Environmental Defence Fund
Mountaineering Ireland established its Environmental Defence Fund in the 1990’s to fund major environmental campaigns such as opposing mining on Mweelrea and the erection of interpretive centres in Wicklow and the Burren.
Mountaineering Ireland clubs and individual members are encouraged to make a contribution to the Environmental Defence Fund. This fund is ring-fenced for access and conservation purposes.
Money raised is used for the protection of the upland environment, supporting education projects, practical conservation work, and to refund Mountaineering Ireland clubs who have an outlay on planning appeals etc. It also has been used to fund environmental publications and research into access difficulties.
