Title:  Hillwalking Committee Matters 2020
Date:  10/11/2020

The Hillwalking committee have been working over the past few months to try to get some of the proposed projects moving forward despite the Covid-19 limitations which have interrupted so many well laid plans.  We would welcome any suggestions for future projects which our members may have or would like to see the committee work on.

So far, the most successful of our projects in our second year of existence has been the endorsement by Mountaineering Ireland of the list of Arderins as the national list of mountains in Ireland, north and south. This is a joint venture between Mountaineering Ireland and Mountain Views and has attracted quite a lot of interest. In the present limitation of 5km range, having access to information is vital. You can find further information on the Arderins here.

Another project we are working on is a Toolkit for our clubs to help them in all aspects of founding, running and/or developing a successful club. This will compliment the current resources available and will be accessible exclusively to Mountaineering Ireland clubs. More information to follow.

The Happy Hiking brochure is going to print now and will be distributed to all the usual outlets to inform walkers and tourists on best practice on the hills. This will also be a valuable resource for clubs to circulate to new members. This information will also be available on the Mountaineering Ireland website and will be accompanied by digital promotional tools.

We hope to discuss establishing walking grades throughout Ireland to standardise levels of walks and hikes. In this way, people can understand which grade hike would suit their ability when joining a hike either with a different club or when going on holiday.

Another topic for discussion is to list out the most used car parks by county so that if one car park is full, the next nearest one could be accessed.  This is perhaps best done by a pilot scheme and enrolling the help of the majority of our members around the country.

Car parking security is another hot topic which has been suggested as a topic for discussion.

As you can see, this is just a taste of the topics which the Hillwalking Committee has been discussing and working on over the past year and once again, we ask our members to come forward with any feedback on the above projects and any further matters for discussion which they think would be beneficial to hillwalkers. The committee will be happy to consider these and get back to our members with the outcome of such considerations. Feedback from our members is what will make the hillwalking committee most effective – it’s a two-way interaction which we hope will lead to improving communications at every level.
