Title:  Do all you can to reduce the spread of COVID-19
Date:  20/08/2020

As hillwalkers and climbers, we can recall those gloriously bright and equally dark days of March, April and May when the sun shone endlessly on the hills and crags that we could not reach due to the travel restrictions.

Despite the ongoing presence of COVID-19, most of us have enjoyed near normal freedom to explore and enjoy the hills and crags over the summer months. Recent increases in the rates of transmission of COVID-19 have resulted in an increase of some restrictions. Thankfully the activities of hillwalking and climbing can continue, albeit with additional consideration around factors such as route choice, travel and parking, and efforts to minimise the spread of COVID-19.

Unquestionably, it is first and foremost our individual responsibility to do all we can to reduce the transmission of the virus for the good of our friends, families and wider community. Allied to this, our ability to go hillwalking and climbing is now bound together with the fight against COVID-19. The message is simple: Do all you can to reduce the spread of the virus.

The Republic of Ireland Government’s announcement on Tuesday 18th of August set a limit of fifteen people for outdoor events and gatherings in the Republic of Ireland.

Indoor climbing walls, along with gyms, swimming pools and other indoor sports facilities can remain open, with strict distancing and other appropriate protective measures in place. In the Republic of Ireland, the capacity is to remain at fifty people, with the number of participants in classes limited to six.

Mountaineering Ireland requests all hillwalkers and climbers to adhere to Government and public health advice and to follow Mountaineering Ireland’s COVID-19 Advice document.
