Title:  Updates from the Hillwalking Committee
Date:  24/02/2020

Here are some highlights of discussions at the Hillwalking Committee’s first meeting of 2020.  The Walk Safely brochure updates were discussed and the committee agreed the title Happy Hiking to be more attractive on a leaflet mainly aimed at tourists and casual walkers. Feedback has been sought from various interested parties before sending the finalised version to print.

Our survey, which was sent to member clubs, has produced insightful feedback and is proving to be of considerable interest on how best to produce support tools to promote hillwalking and attract new members. The purpose of the survey was to ask clubs what difficulties they face and what they would like Mountaineering Ireland to do for them. Analysis of the results is still ongoing and we will keep you updated.

The issue of car parking and security is one which has been raised previously and various suggestions were made. The Hillwalking Committee will raise the various concerns with the appropriate bodies such as the County Councils and will link in with the Access & Conservation committee on these matters. A meeting with Wicklow Outdoor Recreation Council is set up in March to discuss some of these problems.

It is hoped that a Communications officer will be appointed to Mountaineering Ireland in the summer of 2020. This person will step up our social media presence.

Mapping: Thank you to all our members and clubs who have submitted feedback to date on the new Adventure series maps which are currently being developed. We are meeting the OSi team again on the 25th Feb and will keep you up to date with opportunities to further engage with us in relation to OSi matters.

European Ramblers Association: one of our members recently finished the updating of the Irish leg of E8, from Dursey Island to the end of the Wicklow Way in Marlay Park in Dublin, 560 kms. The final report was sent to the ERA and these details will be added to the rest of the updates for the entire hike which starts in Turkey.

The role of Mountaineering Ireland in relation to Challenge Walks was also one of the topics for discussion and the committee have agreed to look closely at the whole area of such walks and events.

Apart from several subgroup meetings with interested parties in the coming weeks, the next full committee meeting is 13th May 2020.
