Date:  26/04/2016

The Youth Climbing Series Grand Final took place at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena in Ratho, Scotland on Saturday 23rd of April. This competition was the culmination of the 2016 Youth Climbing Series which began in January. The Youth Climbing Series takes place throughout twelve regions across Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. In all there were almost three hundred and sixty climbers aged between seven and seventeen years of age.

Mountaineering Ireland was represented by thirty climbers from all over the island of Ireland. These thirty climbers won their place in the Grand Final by finishing in the top three of their category at the All Ireland Final, which took place in Awesome Walls Dublin on the 19th of March. This was the first time that Mountaineering Ireland has been represented by the full compliment of thirty climbers, a clear indication of the growth in popularity of youth climbing.

The members of the Mountaineering Ireland team put in many strong individual performances throughout the day. In all there were seven top ten placings. In Male A Michael O Neil placed 5th and Carson Carnduff placed 6th. In Male D Daniel Creedon placed tenth and in Female D Nina Lesayova placed eight. The biggest result was brought in by the climbers in Male E, the three Mountaineering Ireland climbers took all three places on the podium, Matthew Murray placed 1st, Sean Henchion 2nd and Daire Oglesby 3rd. The team was supported at the competition by Climbing Team Coach Terry O Connor, Talent Development Squad coach Eamon O Riain, Mountaineering Ireland Talent Development officer Damien O Sullivan and John Healy. The climber's parents also played a big part in the success of the day; supporting, encouraging and at times consoling the climbers.
