Title: Consultation Meeting on Bolting Policy for Ireland
Type: Climbing / Access & Environment
Date: 21/10/2015
System Date: 21/10/2015
Mountaineering Ireland is in the process of reviewing the current Bolting Policy. The Mountaineering Ireland Bolting Policy deals with the Placement of fixed equipment on Irish Rock Climbs. The current policy was adopted in 1999 following a broad debate within the climbing community in Ireland.

Over the past number of years fixed equipment has been placed in various climbing locations in Ireland. This may indicate that the current policy is either being ignored, is not being well enough communicated or has become out-dated.

Since the adoption of the existing policy in 1999 there have been changes in the understanding of the legal situation around the placement of fixed equipment, the discovery of new climbing locations and changes in the climbing community itself.  In order to keep the policy relevant, the existing policy is currently being reviewed.

The review process was initiated in the spring of 2015 by active members of the climbing community in Ireland. The review process is being supported by Mountaineering Ireland. To date the review has involved two initial meetings and the writing of a new Draft Bolting Policy.

For the next stage of the review Mountaineering Ireland would like to gather the opinions of the wider climbing community in Ireland in order to more fully inform the review. Mountaineering Ireland aims to gather information by holding a consultation meeting and by inviting written submissions.

The consultation meeting will take place at Awesome Walls Dublin on Saturday 21st of November. The meeting will run from 17:30 to 19:30. If you would like to attend the consultation meeting please register using the Eventbrite online booking system. Please note that there is no charge for attending the consultation meeting, but we do need to know how many people will be attending.

If you would like to make a written submission please e-mail before Friday 20th November 2015.

These documents (accessible by clicking on the links below) provide useful background for the consultation meeting:
Following on from the consultation meeting and the receipt of written submissions, the existing Bolting policy will be further reviewed. The revised policy will then be presented to the Board of Mountaineering Ireland. Subject to the approval of the Board the draft policy will be proposed for adoption by members at the Mountaineering Ireland AGM in March 2016.
