Title: Meeting with Minister for Rural Economic Development
Date: 27/01/2015
System Date: 27/01/2015
On Tuesday, 27th January Mountaineering Ireland met with Minister Ann Phelan TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine and Transport, Tourism and Sport with Special Responsibility for Rural Economic Development.

Last week (20/01/2015) the Government announced that Minister Phelan has, in addition, been assigned to the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government. Comhairle na Tuaithe's departmental home is within the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government. Minister Phelan is the chair of the interdepartmental working group to deliver on the CEDRA Report.

The key focus of Mountaineering Ireland's meeting was to impress on Minister Phelan to take a leadership role in the roll out of the Mountain Access projects and of Comhairle na Tuaithe itself.

Mountaineering Ireland has been critical of Comhairle na Tuaithe's outputs but some potential has been evident over the past 7 months with the establishment of a Mountain Access Steering Group, a sub-committee of Comhairle na Tuaithe with representatives from the IFA, ICSA, ICMSA, the Department of Environment and Local Government and Mountaineering Ireland. Significant effort has collectively gone into the Steering Group and progress made on the components of the Mountain Access proposition, especially on the provision of a state indemnity for landowners, the process to establish a Mountain Access project, etc.
