Winter Mountain Leader Award (WML)

The Winter Mountain Leader Award is for those with an interest in the leadership of others in winter conditions. It is administered by Mountain Training Scotland.
Before applying for registration for the Winter Mountain Leader scheme candidates must:

• Already hold the Mountain Leader Award.
• Have an absolute minimum of 20 winter quality mountain days gained in at least three different mountain areas in the UK and over a period of at least two winter seasons.
• Be well practised in the use of ice axe and crampons.

The revised Winter Mountain Leader Syllabus, is now in effect as of the 2014 Winter season. Whilst the wide consultation brought about no changes in the scope of the award, some clarification was made on the amount of teaching content required and the limitations of snow holing with groups.

This Award  is available through and is currently provided by the three National Mountain Centres in the UK - Tollymore, Plas-y-Brenin and Glenmore Lodge and a few private centres.
