Climbing Wall Seminar

Date: 8&9/10/2019
Venue: Irish Sports HQ, National Sports Campus, Blanchardstown, Dublin.
The Climbing Wall Seminar is being organised by Mountaineering Ireland in association with Petzl and Lyon Equipment.
The seminar is aimed at anyone who has an interest in climbing walls, including owners, managers, coaches, instructors, route-setters, technical advisors etc.

The seminar will take place on the 8th and 9th of October in Blanchardstown, Dublin.

Here is the schedule of topics for the Climbing Wall Seminar.

Day 1 - Tuesday 8th October
10:30 Arrival Reception & Introduction Tea, coffee and pastries
11:00 The Climbing Wall Industry This session will provide a strategic overview of the climbing wall industry in Ireland and around the world.
11:45 Break Tea and coffee
12:00 Insurance This session will present the insurance industry’s perception of climbing walls, how climbing walls can go about minimising exposure to risk and how to deal with incidents when they arise.
13:00 Lunch Soup and sandwich
13:45 The Wall This session will cover relevant legislation, standards and best practice pertaining to wall construction and maintenance. It will also address common pitfalls as well as presenting practical solutions.
14:45 Break Tea and coffee
15:00 Customers This session will deal with the climbing walls responsibility to the customer, how to carry out a robust induction procedure and how to protect from fraudulent claims.

Day 2 - Wednesday - 9th October
10:30 Arrival & Reception Tea, coffee and pastries
11:00 Equipment   This session will focus on how the frequency of incidents caused by human error can be reduced through the purchase of more suitable equipment. The session will cover relevant legislation and standards as well as highlighting the difference between equipment for ‘sport’ and ‘work’.
12:00 Break Tea and coffee
12:15 Staff This session will focus on employer’s responsibility to climbing wall staff and how the frequency of incidents can be reduced through the provision of suitable staff training.
13:15 Lunch Soup and sandwich
14:00 Technical Advisors In this session the role of a Technical Advisor as a support to climbing wall owners and managers will be set out.
15:00 Break Tea and coffee
15:15 Panel Discussion The seminar will close with a panel discussion to allow participants to highlight key points from the two days as well setting out the future course of the climbing industry in Ireland.
