Have your say on the future of outdoor recreation in Ireland

Public consultation is currently open on the development of a new National Outdoor Recreation Strategy - this is your opportunity to say how outdoor recreation in Ireland could be made better.

This last year has re-enforced the importance of the outdoors in our lives, especially the value of having space for recreation close to home. Many more people have discovered the significant health and wellbeing benefits that flow from engagement in outdoor activities. The Covid period has also shown the pressure that increased numbers can exert on the goodwill of private landowners and on the natural environment, as well as the need for education and management of recreation activity on the ground. This new strategy is about making outdoor recreation work well for everyone.

The scope of the strategy covers recreation activities that take place on land and water and in the air, it also includes activity tourism and passive enjoyment of the outdoors.

The National Outdoor Recreation Strategy will provide a vision and an overarching framework for the growth and sustainable development of outdoor recreation in Ireland, creating a shared approach for the many strategies, programmes, agencies and elements in Ireland’s outdoor recreation sector.

This new strategy is being developed by Comhairle na Tuaithe, Ireland’s national advisory body on outdoor recreation. Comhairle includes representatives from farming organisations, recreational users and state bodies with a responsibility or interest in the countryside.  Mountaineering Ireland has been a member of Comhairle na Tuaithe since its inception and we are part of the Working Group leading the development of the strategy.

Mountaineering Ireland is encouraging its clubs and members to respond to the current public consultation, and to share this survey with others. The consultation closes on Wednesday 23rd June.
