Mountaineering Ireland welcomes support from Sport Ireland

Mountaineering Ireland has welcomed the announcement made today by the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, and Minister of State for Sport and the Gaeltacht, Jack Chambers TD, of funding being issued through the COVID-19 Supplementary Grant Scheme, delivered by Sport Ireland, whereby awarding €180,000 to Mountaineering Ireland.

This significant financial investment to Mountaineering Ireland is in recognition to losses sustained by the NGB in 2020 due to Covid-19 pandemic, to support its clubs and members in the new season with membership recruitment and to provide support for innovation projects and support resources to members, commencing in 2021.

Mountaineering Ireland’s CEO Murrough McDonagh, stated: “This is very much a welcome announcement and a hugely appreciated sign of support from Sport Ireland, at a time when all National Governing Bodies have experienced contractions to their Income and Expenditure accounts during 2020. We have been working closely with Sport Ireland over the past number of months and credit must be given to their appreciation of our concerns. This investment of €180,000 provides us with reassurance that Sport Ireland understands the importance of having a strong and robust network of hillwalking clubs, climbing clubs and individual members. This new investment into projects around innovation and resources will allow us to continue develop how we communicate and offer our support to our members. On behalf of Mountaineering Ireland, I want to express my sincere thanks to Minister Catherine Martin TD, Minister for Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media and to Minister of State Jack Chambers TD, Minister of State for Sport and the Gaeltacht, for helping to address the needs of our activities and sports during these extreme times. I would also like to thank the Chairperson of Sport Ireland Kieran Mulvey, their CEO John Treacy and their Director of NGB’s Shane Califf for their assistance throughout this process.

The investment to Mountaineering Ireland comes from the Sport Ireland Covid-19 Supplementary Scheme and covers three sections:

- Scheme 2 - €40,000 towards the National Governing Body for financial losses in 2020

- Scheme 3 - €70,000 towards supporting club / members recruitment

- Scheme 4 - €70,000 to innovation projects / support resources

Mountaineering Ireland will be contacting clubs and members in early 2021 with the details of how it will offer support during the new season.
