Title:  Republic of Ireland COVID-19 restrictions update
Date:  01/12/2020

The government of the Republic of Ireland has agreed the approach for easing COVID-19 restrictions, including a phased move to Level 3 nationally, with a number of exceptions in place for the Christmas period.

For hillwalkers and climbers in the Republic of Ireland there are a number of points that are of immediate relevance. They are:

Group size: From the 1st of December non-contact outdoor sports activity (excluding matches and events) is allowed for pods of up to fifteen people. It is important to note that the limit of fifteen people applies to clubs and organised outdoor gatherings where there is a named organiser, COVID-19 officer, and appropriate measures in place.

For reasons of parking, group management, environmental impact etc. Mountaineering Ireland recommends a group size of ten or less.

Travel restrictions: You are not allowed to travel outside of your county until the 18th of December. From the 18th of December you are permitted to travel outside of your county.

For leaders and course providers: These restrictions make it possible for leaders to lead groups and Mountain Training Providers to deliver NGB Schemes and Awards in the Republic of Ireland. Participants must remain within their own county until the 18th of December, participants may travel beyond their own county from the 18th of December.

Planning: Please plan your activity appropriately, be mindful of changeable weather and shorter days at this time of year.

Parking: Some carparks and outdoor amenities will be busy, make sure you have a back-up plan if there is no parking available. If possible, try to get out during the week rather than at weekends.

Indoor Climbing Walls: From the 1st of December indoor sports facilities, including climbing walls can reopen for individual training only.

From 7th January, the measures put in place prior to 18th December will apply, subject to ongoing review of the trajectory of the virus.
