National Climbing Competitions - 2021 and Beyond

Despite the many challenges of 2020, staff from Mountaineering Ireland, the British Mountaineering Council and Mountaineering Scotland have worked together to develop a proposal to make significant changes to the structure of the competition climbing calendar for national climbing competitions across the UK and Ireland. The intention of the proposal is to create a more cohesive and athlete focused schedule of climbing competitions.

The three main elements of the proposal are to:

  1. Reschedule the National Championship events ahead of the international season
  2. Create a National Series in conjunction with each National Governing Body (NGB)
  3. Reschedule the Youth Climbing Series (YCS) to the latter half of the year

Feedback on the Proposal

In September feedback was sought on the proposal with an online survey being sent to as many stakeholders as possible. The engagement with the survey was excellent and we would like to thank everyone for their input. The results of the survey indicated an extremely high degree of positivity towards the proposals. This positive feedback has endorsed the initial proposal and work is now underway to realize these ambitious plans.

2021 National Competitions

The cessation of national climbing competitions in the UK and Ireland due to COVID-19 has given us the opportunity to make these far-reaching changes to the competition climbing calendar. Whilst it was our intention to fully roll out these changes to the schedule in 2021 the ongoing uncertainty due to COVID-19 means that it is impossible to put in place a plan for the early part of the year with any degree of confidence. Over the coming months staff at Mountaineering Ireland, the British Mountaineering Council and Mountaineering Scotland, will monitor the COVID-19 situation in their areas. Should the opportunity to run a safe and fair national competition arise it will be taken.
It is our intention to further develop the concept of a ‘Four Nations’ series of national climbing competitions and to roll it out fully in 2022.

2021 Youth Climbing Series

The 2021 Youth Climbing Series is scheduled to take place in the latter half of the year, beginning in September. If 2020 has though us anything, it has though us that we need to be both optimistic and adaptable in our plans. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 for organising a large indoor climbing competition such as the Youth Climbing Series, we believe that the correct course of action for now is to schedule in the dates for the 2021 Youth Climbing Series.
Mountaineering Scotland, the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) and Mountaineering Ireland have agreed dates for the four rounds as well as the Grand-Final. The dates are:

Round 1: Boulder: Saturday 18 September 2021
Round 2: Lead: Saturday 2 October 2021
Round 3: Boulder: Saturday 23 October 2021
Round 4: Lead: Saturday 6 November 2021
Grand Final: Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 November 2021

Further details regarding the Youth Climbing Series will be made available in due course.
