In furthering the range of supports available to hillwalkers in Ireland, Mountaineering Ireland and MountainViews recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Both bodies have a strong interest in the sport of hillwalking and by enhancing the level of cooperating, both are strengthened as are the hillwalking community across Ireland.

Within the Memorandum of Understanding both bodies recognise the respective roles and strengths both parties can play. MountainViews acknowledges that Mountaineering Ireland is the national representative body for walkers and climbers and the national governing body for the sport of mountaineering as recognised by both the Irish Sports Council and Sport Northern Ireland.

MountainViews has provided Mountaineering Ireland with lists of mountain heights and other content that will support the promotion of lists. MountainViews has provided an initial selection of lists for use by hillwalkers available through the Mountaineering Ireland website:

In turn Mountaineering Ireland recognises MountainViews as a leading online Irish hillwalking resource and an authoritative source for the compilation and management of Irish hillwalking lists. These lists will be familiar to a great many and include the "Arderins", the "Vandeleur-Lynams", the "Irish County Highpoints", "Irish Highest 100", "The Local 100". These and other lists are managed by MountainViews as they believe it is important to provide a complete family of lists, to be authoritative, and to try to avoid fragmentation of lists, while respecting Irish cultural norms. Mountaineering Ireland will work with MountainViews to promote Irish hillwalking lists as an opportunity for a lifelong personal challenge.

Apart from lists MountainViews offers various other hillwalking resources such as extensive information on summits, track sharing and videography. As the relationship between Mountaineering Ireland and MountainViews progresses, and in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding, both bodies will explore other ways to promote and support hillwalking in Ireland.
