MOUNTAIN LOG EVEREST BASE CAMP 65 On the final morning, excitement surged when we heard that the clouds had lifted and the planes could finally fly. The first plane took off and the atmosphere was electric. By now, we had become friendly with other trekking groups, having met each day at the airport. LUKLA AIRPORT When it was our turn, we boarded the Tara Air plane, filled with nervous excitement. I said a few Hail Marys as we prepared for take-off, feeling like it was now in the hands of the gods. As we soared over terraced mountains and rivers, the thrill of finally landing at Lukla was incredible. The sight of colourful cosmos and marigolds lining the entrance to the town was heartwarming and welcoming. We began our journey on the 4th of October. Our route took us through Phakding, Namche Bazaar (where we spent two nights for acclimatising), Deboche, Pheriche (another two-night stop), Lobuche and finally Gorak Shep – the last teahouse before Everest Base Camp. It took eight days in total to hike up to Everest Base Camp, and three days to come down. Pictured this page: Pat Falvey with Mary, Aisling and Ann Mac Seoin at Everest Base Camp on October 11th.
