Mountain Log Summer 2025

64 Packing proved challenging, as we had to keep the weight to 15kg for the Sherpas, which required careful consideration. Finally, after numerous checklists, Zoom calls and meticulously packing bags, we set off to Dublin Airport. Áine kindly drove us to the airport and Pat Falvey greeted us there. We gathered for a group photo and proudly draped ourselves in the Irish flag. After a heartwarming send-off from friends and family, we were off. The excitement was palpable, as none of us knew exactly what lay ahead. KATHMANDU Upon arrival in Kathmandu, Pat’s team welcomed us with white silk scarves, a traditional gesture, and our taxi was soon loaded with twelve duffel bags and backpacks. As we drove to our hotel, we were immediately immersed in the chaos of Kathmandu traffic, a world far removed from what we were used to. The vibrant colours and frenetic energy were eye-opening. We spent two days sightseeing and preparing for the trip to Lukla, where our trek would begin. Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan. After hours of waiting in Kathmandu’s airport alongside countless other trekkers, we learned that Lukla was inaccessible due to cloud covering the landing strip. Mother Nature was now in control. After entertaining ourselves in the hot, packed departure hall for several hours, we received news that we could fly to Ramechhap in hopes of getting closer to Lukla. This marked the true beginning of our adventure. We ended up waiting for four days at a glamping park. Each morning, we headed to the airport at 6.00am and spent the day waiting for a break in the weather. During this time, our group bonded by playing cards, doing exercises, practicing mindfulness and making trips to a local restaurant. Watching the plane on the runway each day, knowing we couldn’t take off, was frustrating.
