Mountaineering Ireland places a high value on training and the concept of self-reliance for walkers and climbers. We appreciate that cost can often be a barrier to training. Consequently MI operates a number of grant schemes to support clubs and individuals doing formal and informal training. BOS administers these training grants on behalf of MI, while BOS’s remit does not extend to Northern Ireland these grants are open to all Mountaineering Ireland members. There is a limited amount of money available for each grant, so applications early in the year stand a better chance. Grants may be applied for before, or after, training takes place, but will only be payable once training is completed.
Mountaineering Ireland Training Grant This is mainly aimed at clubs, but also open to individual members. The grant supports participation in BOS / MLTNI schemes – Mountain Skills, Walking Group Leader, Mountain Leader, Single Pitch Award etc. The maximum grant is €250 per club in any one year. Preference is given to clubs who: have not previously received a grant; with a high proportion of young members; engaged in formal training for the first time; that could not otherwise afford such training and applications with a larger number of people doing training. Total fund for 2006 - €2,000.
Club Mentor Scheme This new grant supports informal training. The scheme has been designed to assist clubs engaging an instructor to provide training tailor-made to meet the group's needs. The MI will subsidise an experienced instructor (from an agreed panel) to provide a day's training for a club in their own area. The club organises the training, pays the instructors’ expenses and €70 per day. The Mountaineering Ireland subsidy is worth €110 per day, with a maximum 2 days subsidised training per club. See overleaf for panel of providers under ‘Training to Suit Your Club’. Total fund for 2006 - €1,500.
Grant for Aspirant Mountaineering Ireland Clubs Newly formed clubs often grow quickly and rely on the experience of a small number of people. This grant subsidises a weekend training course for two members of paid-up Aspirant MI clubs. The subsidy is worth €110 per person for training at Tollymore Mountain Centre, and €90 per person with other providers. For more information contact the Mountaineering Ireland Training Officer
Training to Suit Your Club At the end of the day in-club training is probably the most cost-effective and flexible option for clubs. Some clubs are recognised by BOS to run Mountain Skills training, which provides a structure for their courses. Another option is to bring in an instructor to run a course that is specific to your group’s needs. Clubs choosing this option can apply for an MI training grant under the Club Mentor Scheme.
Club Mentor Training Grant Mountaineering Ireland recognises that formal training schemes, such as Mountain Leader, Walking Group Leader and Single Pitch Award, will not meet the needs of all member clubs, or all members within every MI club. In response to this, the MI Club Mentor Scheme has been established to provide some financial incentive to clubs bringing in a recognised instructor to assist with training needs.

Who can apply? This grant scheme is open to all paid-up Mountaineering Ireland member clubs with more than 10 members (except those that have already been approved for another MI Training Grant in the current membership year). The application should be submitted by the Club Secretary.
What is available? If your club has more than 30 members, this grant scheme will subsidise an experienced BOS / MLTNI recognised course provider to provide a tailor-made training course for the club. The MI subsidy is €110 per day, with a maximum of two days’ subsidised training per club (ie maximum grant of €220 per club). The club will need to pay the balance of fees (approx. €50 per day) plus the instructor’s travel and accommodation expenses.
If the club has between 10 and 30 members a grant of €110, as described above, is available to subsidise one day’s training only.
What training is covered? The scheme has been designed to support clubs engaging an instructor to provide training tailor-made to meet the group's needs. Any hillwalking or rockclimbing skills training is covered, including leadership training. For example, you could hire an instructor to come to your area and run a weekend training course designed to suit the needs of hike leaders in your club.
Training must be delivered by a course provider on the MI Club Mentor Scheme Panel (see below). The number of people that a single instructor can work with at one time will be determined by the type of training you request. First Aid training is not subsidised by this scheme. If you are unsure about whether your planned training would be eligible for this scheme please contact the Mountaineering Ireland office.

The applicant club is responsible for: selecting and contacting the instructor; agreeing with the instructor what training is to be provided; booking and paying the instructor; co-ordinating participants and advising them of course arrangements, equipment required etc; as well as booking and paying for training venues where necessary.
How does the scheme work?
- Apply using the attached application form, telling us what type of training you intend to do and with whom.
- This application will be dealt with at the next BOS meeting (BOS or Bord Oiliúint Sléibhe is the Irish Mountain Training Board. BOS meets every 2-3 months between September and June).
- BOS will write back telling you whether or not you have been approved for the grant.
- When you have completed the training please claim your grant by writing to BOS enclosing proof of completion (eg letter or receipt from course provider detailing training provided and fees paid).
- Provided the training carried out is the same as in the original application form, and appropriate confirmation is provided, the MI office will issue a cheque to the club.
- If there is any query regarding the claim, it will go to the following BOS meeting for discussion.
Timing Training can be carried out either before or after you receive grant approval, however payment will not be made until after training is completed.
The total funding available for this scheme is limited to €1,500 in each Mountaineering Ireland membership year. You are advised to apply as early as possible in the membership year; if you delay the fund may already have been fully allocated.

There can sometimes be delays in issuing letters; if you do not get a response within two months of submitting an application please contact the MI office to check the status of your application.
How does BOS decide who gets grant approval? Any applications that do not meet the criteria will be ruled out. Preference will be given to:
- clubs that have not previously received an MI Training Grant
- newer clubs
- training that brings new skills into a club
- clubs with a high proportion of young members
- clubs with a larger number of people doing training
- clubs that could not otherwise afford such training.
BOS reserves the right not to award the full subsidy.
Other points
- The club's MI membership fees must be paid in full.
- Applications must be on the correct form.
- The type and amount of training done must be the same as on your application.
- BOS's decision will be final.
