Path repair options for Croagh Patrick

A meeting for Mountaineering Ireland members

On Tuesday evening, 25th April at 7.30pm, a meeting will take place in Westport Town Hall Theatre for Mountaineering Ireland members to learn about proposals for repair of the Pilgrim Path on Croagh Patrick.

Scottish-based consultants Walking the Talk have been appointed by the Croagh Patrick Stakeholders Group to:

Carry out a full study of the pilgrim path on Croagh Patrick;

Identify alternative options for the repair and maintenance of each section of the path;

Consult with the Croagh Patrick Stakeholders Group to agree a preferred option;

Produce detailed specifications for repair of the path, including costings and necessary environmental and archaeological assessments.

The detailed survey work on the route is being carried out the week of 24th April and this meeting has been arranged to take advantage of the fact that the consultants will be in the area.

Proposed agenda:

Helping the Hills initiative to address upland path erosion (Helen Lawless, Mountaineering Ireland)

The Croagh Patrick Stakeholders Group and its work to date (Martin Keating, Mayo County Council and Chair of the Croagh Patrick Stakeholders Group)

Findings from path survey on Croagh Patrick and recommended options for repair (Chris York, Walking the Talk)

Chris York’s presentation will consider the long term management of Croagh Patrick, the physical challenges of repairing the damage and the wider strategic considerations about visitor management. There will be time for questions and an opportunity for people to provide their feedback on the proposals.

This meeting is open to all Mountaineering Ireland members and other walkers and climbers with an interest in the future management of Croagh Patrick.
