The issues of access and conservation have far reaching effects on the sport of mountaineering. It affects all participants from the gentlest rambler to the most extreme climber and all recreational users in between. Access to the uplands is an integral part in the enjoyment of our activities and is, therefore of great importance to the MCI. Through cooperation and negotiation we hope to come to a point where access is no longer viewed in a negative context rather it is seen as a goal achieved through partnership and mutual benefit.
Conservation of our natural environment enhances our outdoors experience while also preserving it for future generations. The MCI hope to inform outdoor enthusiasts about the impact which their particular activities have on the natural environment and how to minimize it. The MCI Environmental Policy and the Leave No Trace Principles help provide valuable information in the protection of our natural environment. As of mid August 2007 I took up the position of Access and Conservation Officer. In this post I plan to liaison with stakeholders at all levels in securing continued access to, and ensuring sustainable use of, Ireland’s uplands. Through the provision of practical support and advice I hope to assist in the resolution of access difficulties as they arise while working to prevent further problems from developing. I will promote good practice amongst hillwalkers and climbers by providing information to MCI members and others on access and conservation matters, a lot of which can be accessed through this website.
