Title:  2017 Youth Climbing Series Grand Final
Date:  03/05/2017

Taking place at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena in Ratho Scotland the 2017 Youth Climbing Series Grand Final attracted two hundred and sixty young climbers from across the UK and Ireland. Mountaineering Ireland was represented by twenty-five climbers who had placed in the top three of their competition category following the three Youth Climbing Series rounds held in Dublin, Cork and Derry.

Three members of the Mountaineering Ireland team took podium places at this year’s Grand Final. In Male Youth D Sean Henchion took third place. Sean climbed exceptionally well throughout the competition, only coming unstuck on the third last move of his final route. Sean was one of only three climbers in the entire competition to climb all three of his boulder problems on his first attempt. Also in Male Youth D Matthew Murray took second place. Matthew climbed very consistently on all of his climbs, dropping only one point on his three boulder problems and coming off just two moves below the top of his third route. These two results all the more impressive as both Matthew and Sean are in their first year of this category.

Seeing off very strong competition from all across the UK, Michael O Neill convincingly won the Male Youth A by a huge margin of seventeen points. Michael who is a relative novice to the Youth Climbing Series, this being just his second year in the competition, proved again that hard work and determination is one of the keys to success. Along with Sean Henchion, Michael was one of just three climbers to climb all three of his boulder problems on his first attempt. Michael further extended his lead by getting further than all other competitors on the routes.

As well as these three podium results there were a number of other strong results. Daire Oglesby placed fifth in Male Youth D. Like Sean and Matthew, Daire is in his first year in this category. In Male Youth B Darragh Hoare placed tenth. In Female Youth D Nina Lesayova climbed exceptionally well on her three boulder problems, scoring 172 points, just one point less than the eventual winner of the category. A slip relatively low down on her second route put Nina out of the overall contention for her category.
