Title:  2016/2017 Mountaineering Ireland Climbing Competitions
Date:  02/09/2016

The 2016/2017 schedule of climbing competitions is the most ambitious and wide ranging ever put together by Mountaineering Ireland. The schedule takes in twenty-five different competitions across seven months from September to March.

There is a competition format for almost every climber; from young climbers keen to try their very first competition at the Junior Irish Climbing league all the way up to the lead and bouldering championships for the more experienced climbers.

The competition schedule travels the length and breadth of the island taking in some of the very best indoor climbing walls. Indeed it the generosity and openness of the hosting climbing walls that makes the competitions possible in the first place.

The recent boom in the numbers of people taking up climbing through indoor climbing walls has resulted in an increased demand for a more varied competition schedule. In particular the increase in the numbers of young people starting out has led to the introduction of the Junior Irish Climbing League and the Junior Irish Bouldering League.

The recent decision by the International Olympic Committee to include Sport Climbing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has also led to a rush of interest in competition climbing. Olympic recognition for Sport Climbing brings with its raft of benefits including increased media exposure and sponsorship interest.

The 2016/2017 schedule of Mountaineering Ireland climbing competitions begins on the 17th of September with the first round of the brand new Junior Irish Climbing League. This competition is ideal for young climbers with little or no competition climbing experience. It would be perfect for young climbers who are taking classes at climbing wall, part of a NICAS programme or who just enjoy going to the climbing wall to monkey around.
