Death of Hillwalker Following Tragic Accident in Kerry

The Board and Staff of Mountaineering Ireland offer its most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mary Cotter who died following a tragic accident at Macha na Bó (Maghanaboe) on Beenoskee mountain, close to Stradbally village, in County Kerry on Sunday, 7th February 2016.

Mary Cotter was a member of the Ballymac Glanageenty Ramblers, an affiliated Mountaineering Ireland club. She was out with a group of approximately 30 hillwalkers, spilt in two walks, from the Club. Mary’s husband, Dan Cotter was leading the second group on the walk when the accident occurred.

The tragic accident happened when Mary, an experienced hillwalker, slipped on a grassy slope and fell a significant distance into a river below. Mary died at the scene from the injuries she received in the fall. Emergency services, including the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and Dingle Coastguard, recovered her body from the deep ravine at about 6pm. She was taken to Kerry General Hospital where a post-mortem examination took place (Monday 8th February 2016).

Tragically, Mary celebrated her birthday while on the hills with her husband and friends in the Ballymac Glanageenty Ramblers on the day the accident occurred.

Mountaineering Ireland offers its heartfelt condolences to the Cotter family. It expresses its deep sympathy to the officers and members of the Ballymac Glanageenty Ramblers, Mary Cotter’s wide circle of family and friends and the wider hillwalking community in Kerry.

Mary Cotter's funeral arrangement are available here.

May she rest in peace.
