Northeast Turkey
June 14- 22, 2009
Renowned for its flora and fauna, this beautiful region narrowly escaped flooding by a gigantic dam in recent times. However the proposed project caused mass migration from the area and as a result halted development and preserved the pristine wilderness. The few remaining inhabitants are in need of incomes to sustain their nature based lives.
United Nations Development Programme’s Mr Egemen Cakir and Miss Sushi have created this trekking holiday as part of an Eco tourism project to rejuvenate the mountainous communities without damaging the natural habitat. Particular attention is given to supporting local enterprise and sourcing the best food and activities the mighty range has to offer
Rafting, cheese making and dancing are on the programme in this unique destination that’s been influenced by the Georgian and Armenian neighbours. Scheduled for mid June when the snow still covers the peaks and the rapid rivers are roaring, the walks will take us around the wild flower valleys and over the high passes to altitudes of 2,700 meters.
