Alpine Trek from Meiringen - Kandersteg programme

We are delighted to launch a new series of walking Courses at this year's Summer Alpine meet, below you can find details of the new 5 day Alpine trek.  For more information on the event please see our Summer Alpine meet pages on the web site.

Meiringen - Kandersteg Alpine Trek
This walk sees alpine Switzerland at its best: five days, crossing spectacular passes taking in peaks and walking through historic landscapes, valleys and gorges, past the notorious peaks the Eiger, Mönch and Junfrau to the picturesque Swiss town of Kandersteg.

Day 1 Meiringen– Grindelwald

Start: Meiringen 595m

End: Grindelwald 1034m

 

Route: 7 ½ hrs

Meiringen – Rosenlaui 3hrs

Rosenlaui – Schwarzwaldalp 30min

Schwarzwaldalp – Grosse Scheidegg 1 ¾ hrs

Gr Scheidegg – Frindelwald 2 ½ hrs

 

Height: ascent 1370m, descent 930m

 

Continually spectacular secenery today takes you past spectacular peak and impressive waterfalls. At the Rosenlaui hotel you will see what inspired Tolstoi, Neitzche and Goethe who all stayed here.

 

Day 2 Grindelwald – Lauterbrunnen

Start: Grindelwald 1034m

 

End: Lauterbrunnen 795m

Route: 7 ¼ hrs

            Grindelwald – Alpiglen 2 ¼ hrs

            Alpinglen – Kl. Scheidegg 1 ½ hrs

            Kl. Scheidegg – Wengernalp ½ hr

            Wengernalp – Wengen 1 ¾ hrs

            Wengen – Lauterbrunnen 1 ¼ hrs

 

Height: ascent 1100m descent 1350m

 

Spectacular north faces and waterfall with the Eiger Monch and Jungfrau looming above you. You are covering another piece of Alpin tourism history on this walk. Little Scheidegg sees travellers and adventurers from all over the world come together. Climbers on the north face of the Eiger can be watched from here.

 

Day 3 Lauterbrunnen – Murren

Start: Grutschalp (train from Lauterbrunnen) 1486m

End: Murren 1408m

 

Route: 3 ¼ hrs

            Grutschalp – Murren

           

Height: ascent 350m, descent 260m

 

This is a short day with many possible extensions through endless alpine pastures should you have the energy. Car free Murren and the Schilthorn famous since appearing the filming of James Bond offer rare wonderful examples of the ancient walser architecture, not to mention spectacular views.

 

Day 4 Murren – Griesalp

Start: Murren 1638m

End: Griesalp 1408m

 

Route: 7hrs

            Murren – Spilbodensalp 1hr

            Spilbodensalp – Rotstockhutte 1 ½ hrs

            Rotstockhutte – Sefinenfurgge 2hrs

            Sefinenfurgge – Alp Burgli 1 ¾ hrs

            Alp Burgli – Griesalp ¾ hrs

 

A wonderful selection of alpine flowers can be seen in the alpage of Spilboden. The next section is in the shadow of the Gspaltenhorn until you reach the Rotstockhutte, a welcome break on the long climb. From the summit of Sefinenfurgge a natural platform gives breathtaking views of the Bluemlisalp. Ladders and chains help in the descent of the steep couloirs towards Griesalp.

 

Day 5 Griesalp – Kandersteg

Start: Griesalp 1408m

End: Kandersteg 1200m

 

Route: 6hrs

            Griesalp – Bundalp ¾ hr           

            Bundalp – Hohturli 3hrs

            Hohturli – Oberbarjli 1 ¼ hr

            Oberbarjli – Kandersteg 1hr

 

Height: ascent 1426m, decsent 1580m (less 450m if you take the lift down to Kandersteg from Oeschinensee lake)

 

The final day involves a long steep ascent to the summit of the Hohrurli. The wonderfully set Blumlisalphutte offers a welcome break near the top. From here you have a spectacular descent to the impressive Oeschinesnsee Lake with great views of the Kandertal Valley.
